The Italian Tourist Gaze on India
Between Orientalist Allure and Real Experiences
tab edizioni
Tourism provides the most common opportunity to encounter the Other: other countries, cultures and peoples that the tourist gaze imagines, engages with, reworks and represents. This monograph critically analyses Italian tourist representations of the journey to India by bringing into focus three contemporary great narratives, those of travel guidebooks, tour operators and travellers. Informed by a cultural geography perspective, the book addresses the complex relationship between representation, culture and identity, a crucial theme of modernity.
