italian literature education

Pinocchio represents a cornerstone of children’s literature worldwide. The narrative value and symbolic complexity of Carlo Collodi’s work have made it extraordinarily adaptable, as evidenced by its numerous rewritings. Almost a century after its first appearance in 1928, Angelo Patri’s Pinocchio in America is being republished, enriched with the original illustrations by Mary Liddell. This edition is part of a series of studies on education and the Italian diaspora.

Angelo Patri (1876-1965) was the first Italian-born principals of the U.S. public elementary school system. He was a prominent educator who promoted inclusive and progressive education, inspired by John Dewey. In addition to rewriting the story of the puppet, he translated, adapted, and introduced several versions of Pinocchio in the U.S. between 1911 and 1940.
