This book investigates how to protect freedom from totalitarianism. The author focuses on Benedetto Croce (1866-1952) and his critical successors, Gioacchino Volpe (1876-1971), Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937), and Ernesto De Martino (1908-1965). From their perspectives, European humanism could no longer remain elitist and had to be open to a wider audience. Will vertical and horizontal cultural exchanges across various layers cultivate freedom-supporting civilizations?
